FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg softball team capped its 2019 regular season on Wednesday with a pair of losses to Catholic in a non-conference twinbill at Bobcat Field.
Frostburg settles at 16-20 overall after dropping game one 7-5 and game two, 10-1 in five innings.
Senior Olivia Ford scored Frostburg's first run in game one after swiping second base and then scoring on an error by the Catholic catcher who tossed the ball over the head of the second baseman.
CUA's Sabrina Scott doubled home a run in the first inning and then belted a two-run home run to right center in the third for a 3-1 edge before Frostburg rebounded with four runs in the home half of the third.
First-year Erica Payne tripled to lead off the inning before she scored when Ford posted an infield single. Later in the inning and with two outs, sophomore Katelyn Mehrling reached first on an error by the shortstop that allowed first-year Amber Keene, junior Claire Hanlon and Ford to cross the plate for the 5-3 lead.
The Cardinals (18-18) tied the game with two runs in the fourth and earned the win with two runs in the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Emily Moll struckout two and allowed just four earned runs in the circle. Hanlon finished the afternoon with three hits and a run, while Ford was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
In the second contest, the Cardinals scored four runs in both the second and fifth innings for the five-inning win.
Taylor Forgen singled home a run in the first and Sophie Maccarone singled home two more in the second for a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore Taylor McCarty led off the bottom of the second with a double. After stealing third she scored the Bobcats' only run of the game on a fielder's choice.
The Cardinals scored an unearned run on a Bobcat error in the fourth and Bella Ronca highlighted the four-run fifth with a two-out, two-run single down the right field line.
McCarty endured the loss despite allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts.
Frostburg returns to action this weekend at the CAC Tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but has been bumped to Saturday and Sunday due to weather in the Newport News, Va. area.
Frostburg will travel to second-seeded and ninth-ranked Christopher Newport for the first game on Saturday at noon. Win or lose, the Bobcats will play their second game of the tournament on Saturday at 2:00 pm against fourth-seeded Salisbury directly following the CNU matchup.
