Bobcats Wrap Up Regular Season With Overtime Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team won an overtime thriller over Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Mary Washington to wrap up its regular season, 13-12 after first-year Matthew Ward beat the goalie in the extra period.

The Bobcats took advantage of a turnover forced by junior midfielder Taylor McVean to stop the UMW charge in the overtime frame which led to Ward's game-winning shot with 1:25 left on the clock. The game-winning assist was credited to sophomore Jason Clinton.

Ward and junior Jimmy Lucas each scored three goals in the victory to propel the Bobcats to a 9-7 record, 2-4 in conference play, while the Eagles fall to 7-10, 1-5 in the CAC.

Lucas deposited his first goal into the back of the net 1:13 into the game to give the Bobcats the early advantage. FSU added two more in the first, as junior Michael Sipes and Ward each added a goal of their own before the Eagles scored their first. The Bobcats ended the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.

UMW's Kristophe Newman scored the first goal of the second quarter before the Bobcats tallied three unanswered goals of their own, including a man-down goal from the stick of junior midfielder Taylor McVean.

The Eagles responded with a three-goal run, two from senior Vinny Smiroldo, to cut the Bobcat lead to 6-5 going into the halftime intermission.

Coming out of the break, the Bobcats scored four of the next five goals, all from four different players. Lucas netted his second goal of the game while junior Paul Ruppert, Clinton and sophomore Jeffrey Stallings each added a goal in the run. The stretch extended the Bobcat lead to 10-6 with 11:50 remaining in the game.

The Eagles took advantage of a man-up opportunity by rattling off two goals while on the advantage and a third just as the penalty winded down, to cut the Frostburg lead to just one goal. Lucas and Ruppert each scored to give the Bobcats a three-goal lead with 2:44 left in action.

The Eagles quickly regained the momentum, as they tied the game at 12 a piece by scoring three-consecutive goals to force the game into overtime, but their run stopped in regulation, as Wards goal ended the game and FSU came out victorious.

Junior goalie Jack Marks tallied 14 saves to pick up his eighth win of the season. Ruppert tallied four points and nine shots, while Stallings ended the game with three points. Ward added two assists to his hat trick to give him a team-leading five points in the effort.

As a team, FSU outshot UMW 42-38, and tallied 22 successful clears in 25 attempts. The Eagles were led by senior Chris White, who had five points and a hat trick for his team.

The Bobcats are locked into the fifth seed in the CAC standings, which means they will travel to fourth-seed St. Mary's (Md.) for the first round of the CAC tournament. The game will take place on Saturday, April 27. For more information, or to follow along with the live stats or the live feed, visit frostburgsports.com.
