FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team dropped its makeup game against Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe York (Pa.) on Monday, 14-3. The game was originally scheduled for March 29, but was postponed due to weather and field conditions.
The Bobcats record falls to 11-15-1, 1-13-1 in conference play, while the Spartans now sit at 24-8, 13-5 against league opponents.
First-year Jack Maruskin, who came in as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and stayed in the game in centerfield, led the Bobcat offense, going 2-for-2 off the bench with a double and a run scored.
The Spartans drove in the game's first run in the top of the first inning, after sophomore Jack Berry drove in Grant Oberholtzer to give York the early lead. In Barry's next at bat, he homered off of Bobcat senior starter Chase Delost to give his team a 2-0 advantage.
In the fourth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, York designated hitter Justin Kilpatrick knocked a grand slam over the right-centerfield wall to give the Spartans a six-run lead. Kilpatrick added his fifth and sixth RBIs of the game in the following inning, driving two more home in the Spartans' three-run fifth.
Junior Chris Roosevelt got the Bobcats on the board in the home half of the fifth inning, driving a single to left field to score his classmate Mitch Fyffe, bringing the score to 9-1. After the Spartans added two more runs to their lead in the following inning, junior catcher Quin Ambeault doubled to left to bring home Maruskin and senior Jason Paredes.
York would go on to add three more runs to their score in the game's final three innings, including a two-run home run off the bat of Barry, his second of the game, to cruise to a 14-3 victory in the rubber match between the two teams.
Barry and Kilpatrick combined for six hits, three home runs and 10 RBIs to lead the Spartans offense. The Bobcat defense committed five errors Bobcat pitching in the contest.
Delost took the loss for the Bobcats, surrendering six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work. Spartan sophomore Rory Costello earned his second win of the season, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.
Frostburg will next take the field in a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 24.
