MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Frostburg State softball team didn't surrender a run in a sweep of Penn State Harrisburg, Thursday. FSU won a pitcher's duel in game one, 1-0, and then rolled to a 6-0 shutout in the second matchup.
Frostburg evens its record at 15-15 overall and is now an even 4-4 in the CAC.
Game One
Junior Kaitlyn Mehrling tossed a seven-inning gem, stifling the Lion offense as she allowed just three hits and walked two. The Lions only had one player reach scoring position the entire game, as Nina Bruno walked and stole second in the fourth inning. Mehrling ended the threat by forcing two groundouts to keep the game scoreless.
The Bobcat hurler allowed her first hit in the fifth inning, a one-out single from Sarah Coolbaugh. She allowed two more hits, a single in each of the remaining two innings, but that was all as she pitched her way to her sixth win of the season.
Senior Olivia Ford scored the Bobcats' only run of the contest on a fielder's choice while junior Claire Hanlon was at the plate in the sixth inning.
Frostburg posted the first hit in the opener when Mehrling doubled to lead off the fifth.
Game Two
The Bobcats pounded out 15 hits and scored all their runs in three innings.
Sophomore Aliyah Ramey singled home both Ford and sophomore Carly Wirth for a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Both Ford and Wirth singled to lead off the inning prior to Ramey's run-producing single. FSU's third run of the frame came when first-year Erica Payne singled home classmate Amber Keene.
Hanlon singled home sophomore Sam Carver for a 4-0 cushion in the fourth and Payne smacked a double to right that plated Keene and Ramey in the seventh for the final runs of the afternoon.
Payne finished the second contest 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Ramey was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Taylor McCarty collected her fifth win of the spring after posting an impressive outing in the circle as she scattered six hits in the shutout victory.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow with a road DH at York (Pa.) starting at 9:00 a.m. For more information, or to follow the live stream or the live stats, visit frostburgsports.com.
