FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team fell to Mary Washington, 17-1 on Wednesday evening to wrap up its three-game series against the Eagles this season.
The loss brings FSU to 11-14-1, with a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) record of 1-12-1. The Eagles improve to 10-16, 4-10 in league play.
The Eagles struck first, scoring two runs in the opening inning off of senior Bobcat starter Daniel Ryczek. Junior Ryan Roell responded with a solo homer to leftfield in the home half of the first inning to cut Bobcats' early deficit in half.
The Eagles plated another run the following inning, and the Bobcats threatened to respond again, with two runners in scoring position, but Eagles' starter Hank Biggs stranded the pair after forcing sophomore Bret Fogle to pop out, ending the FSU threat.
UMW jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning after RBI doubles from Stephen Johnston and David Lambertson. Nick Bass drove in two more runs with a single to give the Eagles four runs in the inning.
Senior lefty Christian Rivera came in to pitch and gave the Bobcats 2.2 quality innings, allowing one run on one hit, a homer off the bat of Eagles third baseman Garrett Lyons, and striking out one.
The UMW offense continued to score runs in the later innings, as four Eagles crossed the plate in the seventh and five scored in the ninth to coast to the 17-1 victory.
Roell provided the lone Bobcat run with his solo blast in the first inning, his 11
th of the season, tying him with Christopher Newport's Nicholas Baham for the CAC lead in the category. The two other Frostburg hits came off the bat of senior Jason Paredes and junior Chris Roosevelt, both of which were singles.
Mary Washington was led offensively by Christian Hague, Tyler Ray, Marcel Barrett and Nick Bass, who each collected three hits and two RBIs in the effort. Overall, UMW had 20 hits in the game against six Bobcat pitchers.
Biggs pitched the complete game for the Eagles, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the season.
