#3 York (Pa.) Spoils Frostburg’s Upset Bid

YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team held their own, but was ultimately defeated by #3 York (Pa.) on the road on Wednesday night. The Bobcats held a lead as late as the third quarter, but the Spartans went on a late run to earn the 13-8 victory.  
 
The win moves the Bobcats to 7-5, 0-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play, while York improves to 12-1, 3-0 in conference play.
 
The Spartans scored the game's first goal, as senior Brendan McGrath found the back of the net off of a pass from Tyler Nation to give the Spartans the opening lead. FSU answered less than a minute later, as junior Jimmy Lucas scored the first goal of the contest for the Bobcats to knot the game up at one.
 
Overall, six goals were scored in the game's second quarter, four came from the Bobcats. The first one came off the stick of junior Michael Sipes. The York native took a pass from his classmate Paul Ruppert and deposited it into the back of the net on the extra-man advantage.
 
After a York goal tied the game again, Ruppert and first-year Matthew Ward scored back-to-back goals to take a two-goal lead with 3:38 left in the first half. Lucas added another goal before the halftime intermission after a Spartan goal to take a 5-3 lead into the break.
 
York scored two quick goals, both from the stick of senior Thomas Pfeiffer, to start the second half of action, tying the game at five apiece. The Bobcats responded with two goals of their own coming within a minute of each other, as senior attacker Jake Howarth and Ward scored with 9:17 and 8:22 on the clock, respectively.
 
The Spartans exploded for five goals to close out the quarter, two of which from McGrath, to take a 10-7 lead into the contest's final frame.
 
York started the fourth quarter with two more goals to increase its lead to 12-7 before the Bobcats stopped the run with a goal from sophomore Jason Clinton. Overall, the Spartans rolled off a 7-0 run between the third and fourth quarters to propel it to a 13-8 victory.
 
The Bobcats were led offensively by Lucas, who had two goals and an assist, while Ruppert and Clinton each had a goal and two assists on their ledger. Junior goalie Jack Marks stopped 12 shots in the loss.
 
Pfeiffer scored seven of the Spartans' 13 goals to lead his team to the win. The Bobcats were 17-of-17 in clear attempts, but the Spartans held a 44-39 shot advantage and a 42-20 ground ball advantage over FSU.
