FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Paul Ruppert scored five goals, while junior Michael Sipes, sophomore Jason Clinton and first-year Matthew Ward all finished with four points as the Frostburg men's lacrosse team won for the fifth-straight game with a 17-12 victory over McDaniel, Tuesday.
The Bobcats attempted an impressive 56 shots, their fourth game this season with 50-plus, and outscored McDaniel 5-2 in the fourth quarter for the win.
The Green Terror closed the first half with a 3-0 run that cut Frostburg's deficit to 9-8 at the half. McDaniel also pulled to within two goals four times in the second half, but Frostburg proved too much down the stretch.
Junior Jimmy Lucas scored the game's first goal at 13:55 for a 1-0 edge and Ward found fellow first-year Matt Sharkey to close the first quarter for FSU with a 5-3 advantage. Sipes, Lucas and junior Jordan Edwards also found the net in the opening quarter.
In the second, Ruppert scored three goals and Lucas added one as Frostburg built its cushion to 9-5 with 3:12 to play in the half. McDaniel closed the second with three goals including a score from keeper Jakob Katzen as the horn sounded to pull to within 9-8 at the break.
Frostburg scored back-to-back goals in the third from Ward (14:07) and Ruppert (12:40) to lead by three, 11-8, but the Green Terror hung around until late in the fourth quarter when Frostburg scored the game's final three goals to set the final at 17-12.
Ward started the three-goal run in the fourth with a tally at 6:20, first-year Jake Bowman connected on a shot at 5:04 and Clinton found Sipes at 1:47 to seal the victory
Sharkey paced the Bobcats with seven ground balls, junior Sam Natvig won 12-of-24 faceoffs and junior keeper Jack Marks notched 12 saves in 57:29. Marks has saved over 10 shots in all seven games this spring.
Carson Marshall led the Green Terror with four goals and one assist, while Jackson Reilly scored three times.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday at Widener at 1:00 pm.
