MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team suffered a slim 60-56 loss at Penn State Harrisburg, Wednesday.
The Lions (9-13, 3-8) never trailed in the contest and the score was tied three times, but Frostburg (14-7, 6-5) had its chances to take control of the game.
FSU first-year Drew Dunathan knocked down two free throws early in the second half that knotted things at 24.
Penn State Harrisburg responded with a quick 10-0 spurt for a 34-24 lead. Moments later, the Lions increased their lead to a game-high 12 at 39-27.
Frostburg collected a 9-0 run of its own that was started with a three-pointer from senior Megan Kelly that trimmed the deficit to just 39-36. Late in the third, junior Victoria Diggs hit a three-pointer that tied the game again, this time at 45-45.
Diggs and Kelly each connected on three-pointers in the fourth frame to keep the score close and junior Amanda Emory hit two free throws at 2:18 that closed the deficit to 56-55.
Harrisburg limited Frostburg to just one made free throw following Emory's pair as the hosts emerged with the win.
The Lions made the game's first basket, a three-pointer and they pushed their lead to seven late in the first. Harrisburg pushed its lead to nine in the second quarter, but Frostburg closed the first half with a 7-0 run that gave it momentum for the final two quarters.
Dunathan led FSU with a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Emory finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Diggs and Kelly each finished with eight.
Penn State Harrisburg had four players in double figures and was led by Rachel Miller, who scored 16 off the bench. Harrisburg entered the evening as the CAC's leader with 228 three-pointers and the hosts made five more than Frostburg that proved to be the difference.
Frostburg return to action on Saturday when it travels to Christopher Newport at 2:00 pm.
