Frostburg Suffers Tough Defeat At CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Victoria Diggs scored 27 points and knocked down five three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as the Frostburg women's basketball team endured a 70-59 loss at Christopher Newport, Saturday afternoon.

Diggs' 27 points accounted for 45.7 percent of Frostburg's scoring on the afternoon and she was the lone Bobcat in double figures. She finished 9-of-15 from the floor with four assists, a team-high six rebounds and two steals. She also finished just two points shy of matching her season-high.

Senior Megan Kelly finished with seven points, while both junior Amanda Emory and first-year Drew Dunathan added six.

Despite the loss, the Bobcats hung tough for much of the game and trailed by just three at halftime, 35-32.

Dunathan handed the Bobcats early leads with a layup at 9:06 and 8:38 in the first quarter. Frostburg continued the surge when Kelly hit a layup at 8:09 and Diggs hit two free throws as the Bobcats led 8-1.

FSU extended its lead to 10-3 at 7:08 on a layup from senior Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla and the visitors led 12-3 at 4:32 when sophomore Kayla Wilson made a jumper. The Captains answered with back-to-back three-pointers that kick started a 14-4 run to close the final 4:21 of the first for a 17-16 lead.

Bobcat first-year Jada Holland opened the second quarter scoring with a layup that gave them an 18-17 advantage. Moments later, sophomore Grace Butera connected on a jumper for a 22-21 lead and Diggs hit a jumper to extend FSU's edge to 24-21.

CNU answered again with a 12-0 run over the next four-plus minutes to grab a 33-24 lead with 2:00 minutes to play. Diggs pulled Frostburg back into it as she hit two three-pointers inside the final two minutes to help close the deficit to 35-32 at intermission.

The hosts led throughout the third quarter, but Frostburg never let CNU pull away. Junior Amanda Emory opened the third with a layup at 8:50 that pulled FSU to within one at 35-34.

Kelly hit a three-pointer at 7:56 to keep Frostburg within one, 38-37 and Diggs later closed the third with another three-pointer to set the score at 50-46.

In the fourth, Diggs pulled Frostburg within four early in the period, 55-51 with a three-pointer at 8:19.

Emory converted a traditional three-point play at 5:43 as Frostburg trailed just 58-56. At 3:48, Kelly inbounded the ball from under the Frostburg basket to Diggs, who splashed a three-pointer to pull to within 60-59.

However, those would be the final points for the Bobcats as Christopher Newport closed the game on a 10-0 run to set the final at 70-59.

CNU was led in scoring by Jessica Daguilh with 22 points and 11 rebounds. She was the lone Captain in double figures.

Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when they host York at 6:00 pm.
