BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team defeated Bridgewater (Va.) on the road, 14-11 for its first victory of the season on Wednesday evening.
Junior Molly Biggers led the Bobcats, scoring a career-high six goals on eight shots. Sophomore Summer Cavey scored three goals and added two assists, while senior Morgan Cavey and sophomore Stephanie King each had two goals, three assists and five shots in the winning effort.
Neither team could break away from each other in the first half. The Bobcats fired the opening salvo, as Summer Cavey netted her first shot 55 seconds into the action. Bridgewater responded with a goal from Kristen Stark before FSU scored the next three goals of the game, two from Biggers, to take an early 4-1 lead.
The Eagles had a 3-0 run of their own later on in the half, as they knotted the game up at seven after two goals from Anna O'Hara and another goal from Stark.
Each team added another goal, with Biggers scoring her fourth of the contest, and the two teams took an 8-8 score into the halftime locker rooms.
The Eagles struck first in the second half, scoring 39 seconds after the intermission. The Bobcats then rattled off a 4-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. Summer Cavey scored two of her three goals in the run, while Biggers and King added the other two scores.
Bridgewater fought back, scoring two unanswered goals to cut the Bobcat lead to one, but Frostburg scored two of their own and ran out the clock for a 14-11 victory.
Overall, the Eagles outshot the Bobcats by 10, 34-24, but Frostburg held a 15-12 edge in draw controls and a 20-19 edge in ground balls. Senior goalie Abigail McClure earned the win, stopping 15 shots.
