FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Victoria Diggs broke the Frostburg State women's basketball record of career three-pointers made, as she added five this evening to give her a total of 186, surpassing Holly Myers' total of 184, set in 2003. However, the Bobcats eventually fell to Grove City in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday night, 65-56.
The Bobcats spent the first seven minutes of the game either ahead or tied with the Wolverines before a Lindsey Stanforth jumper gave Grove City a 16-14 lead with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. From there, the Bobcats never regained the lead.
Diggs kept Frostburg within striking distance with two three-pointers in the second quarter, the last one tying the FSU record and cutting the deficit to three points, 29-26 with 1:02 left in the half. The Wolverines added two more points after a layup from Lauren Frederick and senior Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla added a free throw and the score at the half had Grove City on top, 31-27.
Coming out of the halftime locker rooms, Grove City went on a modest 7-2 run before Diggs hit her record-breaking three to start a 7-2 Bobcat run to cut the Wolverine lead to 40-36. Grove City inched further away, taking a 48-39 lead into the game's final frame.
Trailing, 56-41 with 8:13 left in the game, the Bobcats stormed to a 16-0 run to tie the game at 56 with 3:12 remaining. Diggs collected five points to lead the charge while senior Megan Kelly added four points to the run.
The Wolverines managed to sing the momentum back to their side for the remainder of the game, as they went on an 11-2 run to close out the contest and win, 65-58, ending the Bobcats' season.
Diggs led the Bobcats in scoring, shooting 6-of-8 from the field, 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, for a total of 21 points. She also dished out three assists, tied for the team lead. Kelly and junior Amanda Emory also reached double-digits with 12 points each. Emory also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.
Grove City also had three players reach double-digits in scoring, as sophomore Jess Bowen, senior McKenzie Black and junior Kate Balcom had 19, 15 and 14 points, respectively. Overall, the Wolverines outrebounded the Bobcats, 43-25, and brought in 21 offensive rebounds alone.
The Wolverines will move on to the ECAC Quarterfinals round on Friday, March 1 at Cabrini University.
