ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - After facing a late five-run deficit, the Frostburg State baseball team scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 17-13 victory over New Rochelle.
The Bobcats offense started in the bottom of the second with back-to-back triples by senior Jason Paredes and junior Mitch Fyffe. Fyffe then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game.
New Rochelle responded with scoring seven runs over the next two innings.
Fyffe started another rally for the Bobcats in the fourth inning with a leadoff double and was later driven in on a single off the bat of sophomore Josh Clegg. After loading the bases, senior Nick Fuhrmann walked and brought home sophomore Tre D'Amico. Frostburg tied the game at seven after two more walks.
Senior Dan Ryzchek came in from the bullpen and shut down the Blue Angels, three-up, three-down in the top of the fifth to keep the game knotted at seven. New Rochelle grabbed the lead behind a pair of singles, making the score 9-7 headed to the home half of the sixth.
New Rochelle's lead jumped to 13-8 after a four-run the top of the eight inning. The Bobcats bats responded with a leadoff single by Junior Devin Griffith. Paredes was then hit by a pitch and Fyffe reached on a fielder's choice which scored Griffith. D'Amico doubled to center field, scoring both Fyffe and Paredes to make the score 13-11, New Rochelle.
FSU tied the game up after sophomore Bret Fogle singled to left field driving in two. Fuhrmann then reached on an error that scored junior Jesse Hodge and moved Fogle to third base. Griffith drove in Fogle with a sacrifice fly to give Frostburg a 15-13 lead. Paredes and Fuhrmann scored later that inning after errors by the Blue Angels, increasing the Frostburg lead to four runs.
Junior Franco Velasquez closed the door on New Rochelle by striking out two of the three Blue Angel hitters in the ninth.
The win is FSU's (3-0) third-straight to start the season with junior Nathan Engle earning the win. Fyffe ended the day going 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Fogle, Fuhrmann and D'Amico also drove in two runs each in the winning effort.
