Bobcats Open Season With Doubleheader Sweep

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Frostburg State baseball season began with a bang, as the Bobcats swept their season-opening doubleheader against Wesley, beating the Wolverines 7-0 and 12-2.

Home runs by junior Ryan Roell and senior Jason Paredes highlighted the day for the offense, while sophomore Colby Lee and junior Caleb Smith shined on the mound.

GAME ONE
Lee started the game on fire for the Bobcats on the mound, striking out five of the first six batters he faced. He added a third perfect inning to get through the Wesley lineup unscathed in the first three innings.

One of only two hits Lee would allow came off the bat of Jordan Maruski, who knocked a double to left to lead off the fifth inning. Lee managed to work around danger to keep Wesley off the board. In the end, Lee threw five shutout innings, allowing just the two hits and one walk while striking out seven, earning the win.

Frostburg's bats were ready to start the season, as the opening runs came in the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Josh Clegg opened the scoring with a double to leftfield. Two batters later, his classmate Tre D'Amico drove in a run of his own, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

Roell led off the following inning with a towering homer to left, giving the Bobcats the first of their three runs in the third inning.

FSU added a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to give them the 7-0 lead it would take to the finish. D'Amico drove in three runs in total while Roell went 3-for-3, needing just a triple to hit for the cycle.

GAME TWO
The floodgates opened in the second inning for Frostburg, as the Bobcats scored seven runs to jump out to a commanding 9-0 lead. The seven-run outburst was highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Paredes, who drove in five total runs in his 2-for-4 effort.

Nine early runs were more than enough for Smith, who cruised through six innings and allowed just two runs.

Before the Bobcats blew the game open, a pivitol moment came for Smith on the mound. A Cory Joines single loaded the bases for Wesley, giving it a chance to get some runs on the board early, but Smith beared down and struck out Daquan Jefferson to leave Wolverines scoreless.

Smith earned the victory, allowing eight hits, two walks and striking out six.

FSU added another two runs in the fourth inning, as Roell laced a double down the left field line to score senior Nick Fuhrmann, and he later scored on a wild pitch.

Overall Roell drove in three runs, while Fuhrmann scored three times in the Bobcats' eventual 12-2 victory.

The Bobcats (2-0) will be back in North Carolina on Friday, February 22 when they take on New Rochelle at J.P. Riddle Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. For more information on Frostburg's baseball team, or to follow the live stats, go to frostburgsports.com.
