SHIPPENSBURG, PA. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team fell on the road Saturday evening to the Shippensburg Raiders by a score of 80-68 in the final game of the MEC vs. PSAC Challenge. The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-2 on the season, while Shippensburg improves to 2-0 on the young season.
The first quarter saw the two teams trading runs in the early going. Junior Jada Holland got the scoring started with a layup, before the Raiders went on an 8-0 run to take an early six point lead. The Bobcats would answer with a 7-0 run of their own to retake the lead with 4:20 left in the quarter. Shippensburg would score 11 of the final 18 first quarter points to take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.
The Bobcats found success in the second quarter, outscoring the Raiders 18-13 en route to taking a 34-32 lead into halftime. FSU shot 44 percent from the floor in the quarter, including back-to-back three pointers from junior Kayla Wilson to propel the Bobcats to a three-point lead. The quarter was capped off by a jumper from sophomore Tatiana Gibson as the first half clock expired to give the Bobcats a two-point halftime advantage.
Shippensburg came out of the locker room with a 7-0 run to retake the lead less than two minutes into the third quarter. However, the Bobcats would stand their ground by scoring nine of the next 14 points to take a 46-42 lead. The Raiders would end the quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 53-50 lead into the final quarter.
The Bobcats were able to keep it close at the outset of the fourth quarter before the Raiders began to pull away. Shippensburg junior Ariel Jones scored 18 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory for the home side.
The Bobcats had a very balanced scoring attack, with four players registering double digits in points and six players scoring nine or more points. Holland picked up a double-double in the defeat, dropping 11 points while snatching 11 rebounds in 33 minutes of action.
Holland was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the MEC vs. PSAC Challenge. She scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds over her two games played.
Frostburg State returns to action on Monday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m. when it travels to face Division I foe Mount St. Mary's.
