Football Pulls Away From Kentucky Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State used four second-half touchdowns to eclipse a slow start for 35-25 win over Kentucky Wesleyan, Saturday.
 
Eleven seniors played their final game at Bobcat Stadium for Frostburg and the group made major contributions in the win that pushed FSU's overall record to 8-2. The Bobcats led just 7-6 at halftime, but posted three touchdowns in the third and two in the fourth for the win.
 
Junior Lincoln Ikwubuo caught two third-quarter touchdown passes, classmate Gavin Lavat rumbled for a pair of scores and senior Vincent Persichetti put an exclamation point on the afternoon as he returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth.
 
Kentucky Wesleyan slips to 0-10 on the season despite running 84 offensive plays and holding onto the football for 37:17.
 
Graduate quarterback Will Brunson tossed a pair of five-yard scores to Ikwubuo in the third as Frostburg built its lead to 21-12.
 
Lavat scored for the second time on the afternoon from two yards out late in the third for a 28-19 advantage. His TD was setup by a 49-yard kick return from junior Aizsha Horne and a personal foul penalty called on Kentucky Wesleyan on the return.
 
Early in the fourth, Persichetti stepped in front of a Wiley Cain pass and returned in 49 yards for his first career touchdown that gave Frostburg a 35-19 lead. The Panthers scored a late touchdown to set the final at 35-25.
 
Brunson finished the afternoon with 179 yards through the air on 14-of-26 completions with two touchdowns. He connected with junior Terrell Brown for 113 yards on six receptions, while Ikwubuo finished with 54 yards on six catches with two scores.
 
Lavat posted 88 of his 145 rushing yards in the second half. He scored Frostburg's first touchdown of the afternoon from 17 yards out for a 7-6 edge with 6:52 to play in the first half.
 
Cain threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Panther offense. Corey Johnson, Jr. scored two touchdowns on the ground and ran for 13 yards on 15 carries.
 
Junior Avery Thurman led both teams with 14 total tackles with one pass breakup. Junior Monte Jones was second on the roster with 13 stops, one tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks.
 
The win gives the Bobcats a 2-1 lead in the series with KWC and Frostburg is now 8-0 in non-conference regular-season games under coach DeLane Fitzgerald.
 
Frostburg closes its regular season next Saturday at Glenville State at 1:00 pm.
