GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Bobcat offense dug into its bag of tricks on Saturday for Frostburg's only touchdown of the afternoon as FSU endured a narrow 10-7 loss at Glenville in the season finale for both teams.
Frostburg and Glenville entered Saturday's matchup averaging 31 and 24.2 points per game, respectively, but the teams scored just one touchdown each in the second half. A first half field goal from the Pioneers proved to be the difference, while the Bobcats missed a field goal in both the first and second quarters.
The win caps the season for Frostburg at 8-3 overall and 7-3 in its first year at Division II in the Mountain East Conference. The loss drops FSU into a three-way tie for third place in the MEC standings with Urbana and West Virginia State.
Glenville closes the season with three-straight wins and a 7-4 overall record, including a 6-4 league slate.
Glenville held a 3-0 cushion at halftime thanks to a 35-yard field goal from Justin Watts with just three seconds left in the first half.
Frostburg rebounded when it scored on its first possession of the second half after marching 79 yards on 11 plays. The ball was snapped to junior running back Gavin Lavat, who pitched it to first-year wide receiver George Richardson. Richardson ran towards the Frostburg sideline before lobbing a pass to sophomore Ben Sexton for a five-yard scoring toss and the Bobcats' only touchdown of the afternoon.
Two drives later, Glenville took the lead for good. The Pioneers moved 73 yards on 10 plays and Jaylen McNair connected with Austin Ratliff for a 10-yard touchdown toss as Ratliff got a foot down against the sideline for the eventual game-winner.
The Bobcat defense did its part to keep the game close as it held Glenville to 277 yards in offense. The hosts had just two drives over 41 yards or more, both resulted in points, and Frostburg forced seven punts. FSU generated two first-quarter turnovers when junior Avery Thurman stripped McNair on a run and senior Vincent Persichetti intercepted a Javon Butler pass.
Graduate quarterback Will Brunson threw for 151 yards on 13-of-22 completions, while Lavat ran for 70 yards on 26 carries. Junior DE Zach Strand led the way with 10 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and one sack.
Glenville's McNair threw for 183 yards and one touchdown, while Ratliff collected eight receptions for 49 yards and a score.
