LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the third time this season, the Frostburg State field hockey team took on Lindenwood, this time in the Independents Championship Weekend. The Bobcats came up on the short end of a 4-3 decision with the Lions.
Lindenwood wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring just 15 seconds into the game. However, Frostburg responded in the latter stages of the first quarter off of junior Gabby Rachuba's team-leading sixth goal of the season. The 1-1 score would remain so at the halftime intermission.
Both defenses went tick for tack in the middle of the game, but Lindenwood would score the next three goals to jump out to a 4-1 lead. The first of those three came late in the third quarter, and that momentum carried over into the start of the fourth. Two more Lion goals were scored in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Frostburg wouldn't go out quietly, as Rachuba found senior Logan Gladden who would score her first of two goals.
Gladden also scored the game's final goal in the final second. Both teams were battling for the ball after a penalty corner and Gladden scored the goal with one second to spare.
Despite being outshot 15-5, Frostburg kept Lindenwood within reach all game. The Lions held a slim 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, and both teams attempted a trio of penalty corners.
Rachuba and Gladden tallied the only four FSU shots, with all three shots on goal between the three resulting in goals. Senior goalkeeper Sierra Smizer played all 60 minutes in the cage and made one save.
Frostburg concludes the season and the Independents Championship Weekend on Sunday against the hosting Bellarmine Knights at 11:00 a.m.
