Bobcats Drop Season Opener

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team dropped their season opener to East Stroudsburg 48-55 in the first game of the MEC vs. PSAC Challenge. Sophomore Morgan Dombroski scored 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead FSU.

The first quarter started with back and forth scoring before East Stroudsburg ripped off a 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. A 5-0 Dombroski run got the Bobcats back into the game after two-straight jumpers, one of which being from beyond the arc. The Warriors extended their lead until Dombrowski tallied another 5-0 scoring spurt to get the Bobcats back in it at 16-14 East Stroudsburg.

The second quarter started with FSU trailing by eight after a three-point shot from the Warriors to make the score 22-14 East Stroudsburg. The Bobcats responded again with an and-one layup from Dombroski and another lay-in from junior Kayla Wilson. With Frostburg down six, senior Amanda Emory hit a jumper to cut the lead down to four. East Stroudsburg responded with a layup of their own followed by two-straight scores from Dombrowski to make the score 27-25 East Stroudsburg at the half.

East Stroudsburg jumped out early in the third quarter extending their lead to 30-25 with a three pointer. The Bobcats responded immediately after with a jumper from Emory bringing it back within three. The Warriors continued to extend their lead to 36-27 with two three pointers, but then the scoring stalled for about two minutes as a both teams made a defensive stand. Emory broke the stall with a made free throw cutting into the Warriors lead. Later on, in the quarter, graduate Victoria Diggs hit a three pointer and a jumper making the score 35-41.  Dombroski ended the quarter for the Bobcats with a pullup jumper and a made free throw giving the Bobcats a 38-41 score at the end of the third.

The fourth quarter started with back and forth scoring again as both teams were scoring only on free throws in the first few minutes. Diggs broke the free throw streak with a three-point jumper bringing the score to within two at 43-45. East Stroudsburg went on a 7-0 run before Emory was awarded free throws and made two of two for a score of 46-51. Several more free throws by Diggs and junior Jada Holland sealed the Bobcats score at 48. The Warriors added to their lead with free throws to eventually seal the win at 48-55.

Emory shot five of eight from the free throw line and collected 14 rebounds. Diggs was right behind Dombroski in scoring as she recorded 12 points on the day, three rebounds and two assists.

The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday for the second day of the MEC vs. PSAC Challenge. They take on the Shippensburg Raiders at 6 pm. For more information go to www.frostburgsports.com.
