FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Haley Altemus smacked six kills, first-year Edwyna Lainez handed out 11 assists and senior Cori Smothers posted 10 digs as the Frostburg volleyball suffered a 3-0 setback at 17
th-ranked Wheeling, Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals improved to 23-3 overall and remained perfect in the MEC at 11-0 behind game scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-9. The hosts also hit .720 in the first set and finished with a combined .484 in the three sets for the win.
Altemus smacked a kill early in set one that kept Frostburg within a point before an 8-2 scoring spurt from Wheeling gave the hosts control. Altemus added four more kills late in the set.
WU jumped out a 19-7 lead in the second game behind runs of 7-0 and 7-1. Wheeling closed out the afternoon when it opened the third game on an 8-1 run for a 12-4 cushion. Senior Bailey Godlove led the way for Frostburg offensive with a pair of kills in the middle of the final set.
Godlove totaled four kills on the day, while first-year Jackie Sterenberg posted four. Sterenberg had seven digs, while Altemus added three blocks.
Wheeling's Haley Kramer led the charge with 15 kills, while Stephanie Sylvester handed out 47 assists.
