Frostburg Falls in Home Match to WVWC

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State fell in the battle of the Bobcats as visiting West Virginia Wesleyan College grabbed the 1-0 result. The loss drops FSU to 3-6-1 overall on the season and 3-5-1 in MEC play, while WVWC improves to 6-2-1 (5-1-1) on the campaign.

Frostburg had three solid opportunities in the first half and all three efforts came on headers.

Senior Blake Geatz headed a throw in high in the air and on frame forcing a jumping save from Wesleyan keeper Jeremy Collins in the 34th minute. Junior Bobby Riffle took a narrow cross in the 38th minute and smacked a header wide left of the goal. In the 41st minute, first-year Lovet Cheg put a diving header on net off a free kick forcing Collins to make a running save to his right.

West Virginia Wesleyan had its first chance to score on a free kick in the 31st minute but a left-footed attempt from Javier Garcia sailed high. Emre Deniz had Wesleyan's first shot in the sixth minute that forced a save from keeper Joel Assal. Assal stopped back-to-back shots in the 20th and 23rd minutes before Wesleyan broke onto the scoreboard in the 41st minute when Nika Monaselidze hit a free kick into the top right corner of the net for a 1-0 cushion at the half.

The Bobcats came out of halftime with intensity as they attempted the first three shots in the second stanza. Riffle had the first shot in the 48th minute off a pass from first-year Louie Kerdock. Riffle's attempt was low and left and forced Collins to knock the shot clear of the box.

Junior Youness Benmouna had a shot miss left at 49:46 and Brown had his second shot of the night sail wide right in the 55th minute.

Wesleyan's first shot of the half came at 60:59 off a free kick and Assal was able to turn away Maycon Santos Diaz's low shot with his fourth save of the night. In the 72nd minute, Assal was called upon again to make an acrobatic save deflecting a would be goal from the WVWC attacker to the left of the goal post.

Frostburg ended the match being outshot 10-9, but recording more saves with Assal's five rejections. FSU also recorded eight corner kick opportunities to Wesleyan's three. First-year Tamino Brown finished with two shots which lead Frostburg. Riffle also ended with two shots on the night.

FSU takes the pitch again Saturday, October 12 as they play Salem at Bobcat Stadium with kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m.
