FROSTBURG, Md. – On Saturday afternoon the Frostburg State University Bobcats took the home contest against the Salem Tigers with a 2-1 win. The Bobcats now sit at 4-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Mountain East while Salem falls to 4-6-1 overall.
The Bobcats outshot the Tigers 15-11 with six of those shots on goal. They also tallied eight corner kicks throughout the game. Junior Youness Benmouna led Frostburg with six shots, four of which were on goal, and tallied both of FSU's goals.
The game opened with a shot by senior Blake Geatz in the 14
th minute to the bottom right side of the goal that was saved by Salem goalkeeper Luis Ramirez. Geatz was able to take another shot in the 24
th minute after a corner kick but unable to convert to a goal.
At the half hour mark of the first half Benmouna took a shot but was denied by Ramirez. Sophomore teammate Cameron Coates followed with a shot to the cage but was again denied by Ramirez.
With only three minutes remaining in the half the Tigers were able to find the back of the net as Mark Ferenczi-Bako collected Salem's goal for the day closing out the half with a 1-0 lead.
Frostburg immediately found the equalizer with Benmouna's first goal of the day off an assist from junior Randy Putnam bringing the score back to 1-1. In the 65
th minute Benmouna found his second goal of the day from first-year Fabian Valenzuela giving the Bobcats the eventual 2-1 win.
The Bobcats put up three more shots after their second goal, but all were blocked by the Salem Tigers goalkeeper.
Bobcat goalkeeper sophomore Joel Assal saw a full 90 minutes of action and recorded three saves on the day.
