Bobcats Win First MEC Match

FROSTBURG, Md. – On Tuesday night, the Bobcats beat Fairmont State 3-1 by scores of 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-21. FSU improved to 8-8 overall and won its first MEC game in school history, while the Falcons fell to 7-10 overall and 1-4 in MEC play.
 
The Bobcats hit .224 against Fairmont State with 52 kills, collected nine service aces, and made 74 digs. In the latter three sets, the Bobcats hit .271 after posting a .100 hit percentage in the first set.

First-year Jackie Sterenberg recorded a career-high 19 kills while sophomore Haley Altemus added 12 kills. First-year Edwyna Lainez earned a career-best 44 assists and senior Cori Smothers had 24 digs.

The Falcons took control of the beginning of the first set 7-3. Frostburg answered with a 4-2 run powered by a kill from sophomore Raven Pratt. Fairmont went ahead 21-10 until a 7-1 run by the Bobcats closed the scoring gap 21-17. Fairmont captured the first set win of a kill from Amelia Moore.
 
Frostburg took a 5-2 lead off of two kills from sophomore Tyler Lott and two kills from Sterenberg. The Bobcats wouldn't look back as they went on a 7-4 run to go up 16-12. A kill by Altemus ended the set and tied the game at one set a piece.   
 
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set until a 6-0 run by the Falcons put them up 6-3. A massive 10-3 run put Frostburg up 17-12 in the third set. Fairmont answered off an error by the Bobcats to cut the score within one at 19-18. Frostburg closed out the set off a kill from Pratt.
 
The Falcons went ahead 3-0 in the beginning of the fourth set until a 5-2 run by the Bobcats tied the set at 5-5. An 8-2 run by Frostburg put them up 17-12 fueled by three kills from Sterenberg, two kills from Pratt, and two service aces by sophomore Delanie Day. Frostburg, who leads the MEC in service aces, fittingly won the match off a service ace from Lott.
