FROSTBURG, Md. – On Saturday afternoon, the Bobcats lost to the Wheeling Cardinals in a three set match. FSU fall to 7-8 overall 0-4 in the Mountain East Conference while WU advance to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in MEC play.
Frostburg picked up their eighth loss of the season after being defeated by scores of 25-15, 25-5, and 25-13.
The Bobcats hit -.027 against the Cardinals with 19 kills in the match. FSU also collected two service aces along with 40 digs. Sophomore Hailey Altemus recorded seven kills in the match while first-year Jackie Sterenberg added three kills and 11 digs. First-year Edwyna Lainez earned 16 assists and senior Cori Smothers recorded ten digs and an assist.
Frostburg jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the first set fueled by two kills and a service ace from Sterenberg and two kills from Altemus. Wheeling went on an 8-2 run to take the lead 13-10. A 10-2 run by the Cardinals earned them the first set win.
Wheeling started the second set with a 16-1 lead. Kills by Altemus and junior Rachel Snead closed the score gap to make it 20-5. The Cardinals won the second set off a 5-0 run.
WU started the third set with a 9-0 run until a kill from sophomore Raven Pratt made the score 9-1. The Bobcats battled back in the middle of the set with kills from Pratt, Altemus, and Sterenberg. A 6-1 run by FSU powered by two kills from senior Bailey Godlove, a kill from Pratt, and a service ace from Smothers made the score 17-11. Five errors by Frostburg closed the third set and handed Wheeling the win.
