CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Frostburg men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback at No. 20 ranked Charleston on Thursday night in MEC action.
The loss drops Frostburg to 3-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the MEC, while Charleston improved its record to 6-2 overall and 6-0 in the league.
The Golden Eagles outshot FSU 15-2 and scored the first goal late in the first half. Charleston tacked on two goals in the second. Ten of Charleston's shots were on goal and Frostburg junior keeper Joel Assal made seven saves, a season-best for the Potomac, Md. native.
Charleston scored the first goal of the evening as the first half was winding down. Jesus Cabanas connected on a high shot in the 43rd minute off a pass from Ploutarchis Alonefti for a 1-0 cushion.
The first half closed without another shot from either team as UC held a 7-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge on shots on goal.
Charleston tacked on two more goals in the early minutes of the second half. Adam Burchell scored an unassisted tally at 51:16 and Burchell scored again at 55:33, this time off a pass from Cabanas.
Assal saved his first shot on an attempt aimed at the top left corner of the game at 31:46. He then stopped a low shot at 33:10 and his third save was at 35:50.
Over a 12-minute stretch in the second half, Assal added four more saves.
First-year Addison Keja took Frostburg's first shot in the 57
th minute, an attempt that was blocked by the UC defense. Nearly four minutes later, Keja had a shot towards the top right corner saved by Charleston keeper Alvaro Dean.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday at Davis & Elkins at 7:30 pm.
