SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It took an extra period, but the Frostburg field hockey team collected its first win of 2019 on Saturday. The Bobcats came from behind to secure the win 2-1 over Converse with 44 seconds remaining in overtime.
The first half was played to a scoreless tie until Converse broke the deadlock 5:53 into the third quarter. Frostburg would respond in the opening stages of the fourth quarter when junior Brooke Lafayette found the back of the cage after getting a feed from fellow junior Gabby Rachuba.
With the score tied at one apiece, the Valkyries and Bobcats would exchange blows throughout the overtime period. With the clock ticking down, Rachuba would strike the final blow to secure Frostburg's first division II win in program history.
Frostburg held a 7-3 edge in shots and took the final six shots of the contest. In the fourth quarter and overtime period, the Bobcats held a 4-0 edge in shots and penalty corners, helping catapult the visitors to victory.
Senior goalkeeper Sierra Smizer played all 69:16 in net for the Bobcats, allowing a goal and making one save.
