SECOND, FIFTH, SIXTH, EIGHTH & TENTHÂ Â Â Â Â Â
Frostburg was picked to finish ninth in its first season as a member of the Mountain East Conference and four of FSU's five wins have come against teams picked ahead of them in the poll.
Frostburg took down Fairmont in 2OT and the Falcons were picked to finish second in the league. The Bobcats have also defeated Urbana (fifth), West Liberty (sixth) and Concord (eighth). Last Saturday, the Bobcats defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 35-13, which was picked to finish in 10th.
Charleston was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll.
UNDER THE LIGHTSÂ Â Â Â Â
Under Fitzgerald, Frostburg is nearly perfect at 10-1 in night games both home and away from Bobcat Stadium. In fact, prior to the Bobcats' home opening loss at night to West Virginia State, Frostburg was a perfect 5-0 in season openers under Fitzgerald and all five wins had come under the lights.
This season, FSU is 2-1 in night games, losing to W.Va. State (20-17) and beating West Liberty (27-24) and Fairmont State (41-34 2OT).
SCORING FIRSTÂ Â Â Â Â
Frostburg is currently riding a five-game winning streak and FSU has scored first in four of those wins. Under Fitzgerald, FSU is 37-3 when scoring first.
FIVE STARÂ Â Â Â Â
Frostburg is currently riding a five-game winning streak after opening the season with a loss. The Bobcats have collected at least five-straight wins in each of the last five seasons dating back to 2015.
A VICTORY WOULDÂ Â Â Â Â
- Lift the Bobcats to 282-283-8 overall in 59 seasons
- Land Fitzgerald his 47th victory at the helm of Frostburg
- Hand the Bobcats their 10th-straight win in October
- Ensure Frostburg of a winning record in its first season at DII
- Be FSU's third home win this season
- Be Frostburg's fourth-straight season with a six-game winning streak
TOUGH TO COME BYÂ Â Â Â Â
In his five-plus seasons at the helm, Fitzgerald has led the Bobcats to a 29-1 record when holding opponents to less than 100 yards rushing.
WHO DOESN'T LIKE EXTRA FOOTBALLÂ Â Â Â Â
During Fitzgerald's tenure in Western Maryland, Frostburg is 4-1 when a game needs to be decided in overtime. The Bobcats are 3-0 during that span in games that need two overtimes just as FSU's thrilling 41-34 win over Fairmont couldn't be settled in just one extra frame.
The win over Fairmont marks the third-consecutive season that FSU has collected a win in OT.
Since Frostburg's first overtime game in 1999, the Bobcats are 7-5 all-time when a game needs more than the normal 60 minutes.
IN WILL WE TRUSTÂ Â Â Â Â
Frostburg graduate QB Will Brunson is in rare territory despite the recent success under center for the Bobcats. Brunson has thrown for 13 touchdowns through the first six games, including three in last Saturday's 35-13 win over W.Va. Wesleyan.
Brunson is currently averaging 2.16 TDs per game and if that pace continues, he will finish fourth in the single-season record books with just under 24 touchdowns.
OPPONENT BACKFIELDSÂ Â Â Â Â
A pair of Frostburg juniors have been introducing themselves to MEC opponents by spending quality time in their opponent's backfield.
Carl Igweh and Zach Strand are currently first and third in the league's statistical standings in tackles for loss. Igweh paces the league with 12.0 tackles for loss (2.00), while Strand is third at 9.5 (1.58).
In his two years with Frostburg, Igweh has made 18 stops behind the line, while Strand has 26.5 TFLs through 2.5 years on the roster.
Igweh is currently 13th among NCAA Division II players in TFLs per game, while the Bobcats would rank third in DII in TFLs (10.3) and fifth in sacks (4.33).
LEANING ON LAVATÂ Â Â Â Â
Junior RB Gavin Lavat is third in the MEC statistics in rushing this season, averaging 96.3 yards per game over FSU's first six games in Division II.
Lavat ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Concord and rumbled for 124 yards on 24 carries with one touchdown in a win over Urbana.
BOBCATS IN THE MECÂ Â Â Â Â
Through six MEC games this fall, Frostburg is ranked fifth in the MEC in scoring (32.7) and leads the league in scoring defense (20.2). FSU also leads the league with 26 sacks and has allowed just two sacks this season, the best mark in the conference and a mark that has them tied for national lead.
FINDING THE END ZONEÂ Â Â Â Â
The Bobcats have scored 61 offensive touchdowns in each of the last two seasons. In 2017, Frostburg's 61 TDs broke the program record of 53 touchdowns that was set in 1990.
So far this fall, Frostburg is averaging four TDs per game and if that pace continues, the Bobcats will find the end zone nearly 44 times in their first season at DII.
LAST TIME OUTÂ Â Â Â Â
Frostburg quarterback Will Brunson threw for three touchdowns and FSU scored 21 points in the second half to outpace West Virginia Wesleyan 35-13.
Â
Frostburg found the endzone in the first and second quarter for a 14-6 lead at halftime. However, FSU scored three-straight touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to secure its fifth-straight win.
Â
The defense also played a vital role in the win for Frostburg as the unit produced nine sacks, 13 tackles for loss and forced Wesleyan to punt eight times. Juniors Trevor Booker ad Carl Igweh led the defensive effort with 3.0 TFLs and 3.0 sacks each.
