Frostburg Edges SVU 72-69

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Frostburg men allowed a 14-0 run in the second half but rallied for a 72-69 win on Wednesday night over Southern Virginia to remain undefeated in CAC play.
 
The Bobcats push their record to 7-6 overall and remain perfect at 3-0 in CAC action. Meanwhile, the Knights fall at 0-3 in the league and 4-10 overall.
 
Four starters closed the evening in double figures for Frostburg. Senior Edwin Cole led the charge with a double-double behind 19 points and 10 rebounds, while first-year Torrin Stephens contributed 12 points and a career-best 13 boards.
 
Junior Lawrence Pettis offered up a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Classmate Daniel Alexander scored 15 points with eight rebounds and seven assists.
 
Frostburg led by six at intermission, 40-34, but Southern Virginia answered in the second half with a 14-0 run that started at 15:29 and ended at 12:20. Following the quick outburst, the hosts led 54-48.
 
With 10:05 showing on the second half clock, Cole knocked down a three-pointer that pulled FSU to within 59-57 before Stephens hit two free throws that tied things at 59-59 at 9:13.
 
Stephens snared an offensive rebound at 8:28 and made the put back for a 61-59 Frostburg lead at 8:23. SVU made one final push as Sam Armstrong and Jamier Cross each hit three-pointers following Stephens' layup for a 67-61 lead for the Knights.
 
Frostburg rebounded for good when Cole hit a jumper at 5:16 and first-year Nicholas Johnson made a three-pointer at 4:40 as FSU trailed by just one, 67-66. Alexander continued the surge with a layup at 2:21 and he capped the night's scoring when he tossed the ball towards the basket that Cole flushed for a dunk for a 72-69 Bobcat lead.
 
The Knights led by as many as six in the opening half of play when Tyler McCreadie hit a layup in the paint at 11:08 for an 18-12 advantage. Armstrong later hit a three-pointer that gave the Knights a 26-22 lead at 6:29.
 
FSU outscored Southern Virginia 18-8 over the final 6:14 for a 40-34 lead at the break. Pettis hit two foul shots at 1:30 as Frostburg led by nine, 39-30.
 
Four players finished in double figures for the Knights as they were led by Cross with 16. Armstrong came off the bench to add 13.
 
Frostburg hosts No. 21 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
