Bobcat Drops First League Contest to No. 21 CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – Each team finished with three players in double figures but 21st-ranked Christopher Newport slowly pulled away from a pesky Frostburg men's team on Saturday as CNU captured a 75-65 victory.

The loss is the first in the league this season for the Bobcats as they fall to 3-1 against CAC opponents. It is also the first loss at Bobcat Arena as FSU entered the matchup against the Captains (13-2, 3-1) with an unblemished 3-0 slate.

Frostburg, which sits at 7-7 overall, was led in scoring by junior Daniel Alexander, who totaled 16 points with six rebounds. Senior Edwin Cole added 14 points and junior Terry Kenner came off the bench for 13 points. Junior Lawrence Pettis, Jr. handed out 10 assists.

Cole, Alexander and first-year Torrin Stephens each hit early jumpers as Frostburg led by two points on each of their baskets in the opening few minutes.

Cole knotted the game at 13-13 at 13:43 with a three-pointer and he snared an offensive rebound and made the put back a minute later as the Bobcats led by two, 15-13.

The Captains pushed their lead to double-digits for the first time with 4:09 to play when Savonte Chappell made a layup for a 36-26 edge.

Frostburg answered just before the half as Stephens hit a three-pointer at 3:11 and Kenner connected on a three-pointer of his own as the Bobcats trailed by just two, 38-36, with 1:01 showing.

CNU pushed its lead back to six, 42-36 with a late three-pointer as the game hit intermission.

Christopher Newport began to slowly pull away in the second half and Luther Gibbs hit a layup at 12:29 for a 53-43 lead. FSU cut it to six on back-to-back baskets from Alexander at 10:07, but CNU pushed its lead to 13 less than two minutes later.

Stephens closed out the afternoon's scoring with a layup with 20 seconds left that cut FSU's final deficit to 75-65.

The Captains were led by Chappell's 23 points, while Jason Aigner hit six three-pointers and finished with 21. Gibbs grabbed 10 rebounds.

Frostburg returns to action this Wednesday when it hosts Penn State Harrisburg at 8:00 pm.
