FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) leader Southern Virginia at home, 72-67 on Wednesday night.
The Bobcats had three players end with double digits in the points column, led by senior Megan Kelly with 17, 14 of which came in the second half. Juniors Victoria Yoder and Victoria Diggs put up 16 and 14 points respectively and each held a share of the team lead with seven rebounds.
With the score tied 4-4 early in the first quarter, the Bobcats went on an 11-6 run to take a 15-10 lead into the first break in action. Yoder led the charge with her first eight points of the night in the run.
The Knights came back to take a 21-20 lead with 5:37 left in the half after two successful free throws by Katie Garrish. SVU continued to hold the lead until the halftime buzzer, taking a 31-26 lead into the locker room. At the end of the half, Garrish led the Knights with 17 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the field.
The Knights' Bryndie Ballam opened the second-half scoring with a layup to give SVU a seven-point lead, but that was the biggest lead her team would have. The Bobcats fought back to take a 40-39 lead with 5:36 on the third-quarter clock after an Amanda Emory jumper. In a quarter that went back and forth, the Bobcats took a 56-54 advantage into the game's final quarter thanks to two three-pointers from Kelly.
The fourth quarter featured six lead changes, and it started with a good three-pointer from SVU's Cory Stout, giving the Knights a 57-56 advantage. With Southern Virginia holding a one-point advantage, senior Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla put in a layup to give the Bobcats a 63-62 lead with 5:04 left in the game. Frostburg held the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Knights cut the deficit to one point with 1:15 left on the clock after a layup from Savanna Christiensen, but FSU pulled away again on its way to the 72-67 victory.
Overall, the second half featured 11 lead changes and Kelly was a perfect 5-for-5 with four of those being from beyond the arc to lead the way for the Bobcats. Garrish ended the game with 27 points and nine rebounds, both leading the Knights.
The Bobcats improve to 13-6, 5-4 in the CAC while Southern Virginia falls to 16-3, 7-2 in the conference.
