Bobcats Win First CAC Game Of The Season

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington on Wednesday night, 54-40. The victory was the Bobcats' fifth straight as it increases its record to 9-2, 1-0 in the CAC.

The Bobcats started the action with a 6-0 run, all six points coming from junior forward Amanda Emory. The Eagles responded with a 7-0 run of their own, taking a 7-6 lead with 58 seconds left in the quarter. First-year Bobcat Anna Reese drained a three-pointer to give Frostburg a 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Reese's three-pointer kicked off a 13-2 Bobcat run, which gave Frostburg a 19-9 lead. The Eagles cut their deficit to seven points, but Reese led the Bobcats again on an 8-0 run, collecting five points during the stretch. Frostburg carried a 29-18 lead into the halftime locker room. The Bobcats limited the Eagles to shooting 23% from the field in the first half.

It took the Eagles until just under three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter to get within striking distance of Frostburg. Mary Washington junior Emily Thompson shot a successful three-pointer to cut the Bobcat lead to 38-35. Back-to-back three-pointers from junior Victoria Diggs and senior Megan Kelly extended Frostburg's lead back to nine points with 5:10 left in the game.

From there the Bobcats cruised to a 54-40 victory, their fifth in a row and their longest winning streak since they entered the CAC. Frostburg's 9-2 start is the program's best start to a season since the 2009-2010 campaign, when the Bobcats went 11-2 in their first 13 games. The victory was also the Bobcats' first win over the Eagles since the 2003-2004 season. The Eagles fall to 6-6, 0-1 in the conference.

Emory ended the night with a team-high 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Kelly collected seven rebounds, dished out six assists and drained three shots from beyond the arc. The Eagles were led by sophomore Tory Martin, who scored a game-high 16 points and brought in seven rebounds.

The Bobcats made a season-best 10 three-pointers on 43.5% shooting while holding Mary Washington to just 1-of-12 when shooting from beyond the arc.

Frostburg's next game will take place on Saturday, January 5m at 2:00 p.m. when it takes on St. Mary's (Md.) on the road.
