SALISBURY, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team overcame a nine-point second-half deficit behind a season-best 29 points from junior guard Victoria Diggs to defeat in-state rival Salisbury 56-52 on Saturday afternoon.
The victory puts the Bobcats (12-4, 4-2 CAC) even with the Sea Gulls (12-5, 4-2 CAC) in second place in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) standings. The victory is FSU's first in Salisbury since the 2010-11 season.
Facing a 43-36 deficit at the end of the third quarter, the Bobcats turned to Diggs who delivered 14 of FSU's 20 points in the deciding frame. Diggs began the scoring in the fourth with a backdoor layup before knocking down four consecutive free throws to bring the Bobcats within two. Senior Megan Kelly tied the game at 46 with a layup with 5:03 remaining.
From there Diggs either scored or assisted on the final 10 points of the contest for the Bobcats. She sliced through the defense to tie the game at 48 with 2:50 left in regulation and drained a step-back triple less than a minute later to give the Bobcats a 51-50 advantage they would never relinquish.
Diggs found junior Amanda Emory for a layup to extend Frostburg's lead to three-points in the final 90 seconds before sinking three free throws to seal the contest.
Over half of Diggs' points for the game came from the charity stripe as she connected on 15-of-17 free throw attempts. She added a pair of three-pointers, including the go-ahead make in the fourth and recorded five rebounds as well. Emory logged a full 40 minutes and joined Diggs in double-figures, netting 14 points and seven rebounds.
Defensively, the Bobcats limited Salisbury to 28.1% shooting from the field and 2-of-8 from three. The Bobcats move to 7-0 when holding an opponent shoots under 30%.
FSU scored 26 points on 20 Sea Gull turnovers, while only turning it over 12 times themselves.
Both teams started slowly out of the gate with Frostburg holding a 9-8 advantage after the first quarter of play. The Bobcats led by as many as six points in the second quarter before Salisbury closed the gap to a single point going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Salisbury used an 11-0 spurt to seize a 41-32 advantage with two minutes remaining in the period before Diggs and first-year Anna Reese each scored to bring the deficit to seven heading into the fourth.
Frostburg continues its three-game CAC road trip on Wednesday evening at York (Pa.) at 6:00 p.m.
