FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team was defeated by No. 17 Christopher Newport, 89-83, on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the Bobcats' first home loss of the season.
FSU junior guard Victoria Diggs led the day with 23 points, including four buckets from beyond the arc, while senior Megan Kelly made five three-pointers and scored 17 points. Junior forward Amanda Emory led the team with nine rebounds, while also collecting 13 points and five assists.
CNU was led by freshman Sondra Fan, who shot 8-of-8 from the field, including two three-pointers and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line on her way to a team-high 20 points. Freshman Jessica Foster dished out six assists and scored 13 points in the winning effort.
The Captains were up, 46-29 with 2:50 left in the first half before the Bobcats stormed to a 17-4 run to cut the CNU lead to 50-44 going into the halftime locker room. Junior Victoria Yoder put an exclamation point on the run after beating the buzzer with a layup to send both teams into the break.
Coming out of the break, Diggs picked up where the Bobcats left off, knocking down a three-pointer to open the second-half action and closing the deficit to three points, 50-47. Later on, Emory laid in a basket to bring the score to 53-51 with 7:13 left, but that was the closest Frostburg would get to the Captains.
CNU went on a 17-4 run to break away from Frostburg, ending the stretch with a Fan three-pointer with 1:12 left in the third quarter. The Captains entered the final frame with a 74-58 lead.
The Bobcats opened the final stanza with an 11-0 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Kelly before CNU made their first basket of the quarter, bringing the score to a 74-69 Captains lead.
Diggs added two three-pointers with under 30 seconds left of action, but CNU hung on to earn the 89-83 victory.
Frostburg State (10-4, 2-2 CAC) will look to bounce back in its next game against Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, January 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Bobcat Arena.
