NEWARK, N.J. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 loss at Rutgers-Newark despite leading in just about every statistical category, Saturday.
The loss dropps Frostburg to 1-1 overall, while the win pushed the Scarlet Raiders to 2-1-1.
Frostburg outshot Rutgers 17-10 and it placed 12 of those shots on net. The Bobcats also attempted 12 shots in the second half, including nine shots following the game's only goal in the 53
rd minute.
On a free kick, Juliana Ceballos found Melanie Egas who flipped a quick pass to Maria Miranda for the game's only goal at 52:56.
Rutgers keeper Jasmin Erichsen did her part to keep Frostburg off the board by stopping 12 shots, including seven in the second half.
The Bobcats attacked Erichsen and Scarlet Raider defense from the very start, saving a shot from junior Brooke Shehade just 43 second into action. FSU junior Gwen Schemm had a shot stopped by Erichsen less than four minutes later.
Shehade started the second half like she did the first with a quick offensive as she attempted a shot just 1:05 into the frame that was again turned away by Erichsen.
Later in the half, senior Danielle Ferris and first-year Audra Curtin had back-to-back shots saved in the 76
th minute. Erichsen notched her final two saves at 83:13 and again at 85:21.
Shehade finished the afternoon with five shots, including three on goal. Ferris attempted three shots, while Curtin and sophomore Emily Lehman finished with two apiece. Senior Rhianna Lapen played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bobcats in the loss.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow at Montclair State at 1:00 pm.
