FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg volleyball team opened the home portion of its 2018 schedule with a dominating 3-0 win over Penn State Altoona, Wednesday.
The Bobcats opened the season with a 2-2 mark following this past weekend's Bearcat Challenge at Saint Vincent. Tonight's 25-17, 25-6 and 25-12 win over the Lions pushed their record to 3-2 overall.
Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona slips to 1-4 overall this fall.
The Bobcats hit .281 with 37 kills in the three sets and never trailed Altoona in the final two games.
Set one was the closest of the night, and the Bobcats used a pair of 3-0 scoring spurts for an 18-15 cushion. Junior Biamba Tshitenge closed out the set with a kill off an assist from classmate Katie Onyundo. In set two, Frostburg used a 12-1 run to take command with a 22-4 advantage. In the third game, a late 8-1 run handed the hosts a 20-10 lead.
The Bobcats hit .435 with 11 kills and just one error in the second set and they followed it up with 14 kills and a .314 hitting percentage in the third game.
Tshitenge and junior Bailey Godlove each paced the FSU attack with 10 kills. First-year Haley Altemus finished with eight kills. Tshitenge also contributed a team-high four blocks.
Onyundo handed out a career-best 28 assists and has increased her total in each match this season. She also finished with eight digs and two kills.
Junior Cori Smothers led Frostburg in digs for the third time this fall with 11 digs. Junior Kathryn Lough was second on the roster with 10 digs.
FSU returns to action on Friday when it faces Thiel at 6:00 pm at the Golden Eagles Invitational at the College of Brockport.
