Westminster Rallies Past Frostburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Westminster slipped a shot along the turf and into the corner of the far post to snatch a 3-2 overtime win from visiting Frostburg, Tuesday night.

Frostburg (3-6-1) held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the match, but the Titans (6-2) scored their final goal of regulation on a penalty kick in the 86th minute.

The Titans' game-winner came in the 98th minute of action when Ahmed Cisse hit a left-footed shot from a tough angel into the far corner for the 3-2 win.

Frostburg sophomore Punya Saleekul had the best chance to win the game for the visitors in extra time as his free kick from just outside the 18 bounded off the left post and caromed away from the net.

FSU held a 1-0 cushion for much of the contest after sophomore Randy Putnam headed home a failed clear by the Westminster defense in the 32nd minute.

Following Putnam's tally, Frostburg first-year keeper Joel Assal made four-straight saves over a 30 second span starting at 36:55 to keep the Bobcats in the lead at intermission.

Assal opened the second half with saves in the 46th and 55th minutes before Westminster scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute as a ball was rolling towards the end line that Noah Weiss crossed to a streaking Peter Mattocks.

Assal made two more saves for Frostburg following the Titan goal before Frostburg surged to a 2-1 advantage. First-year Kaps Kapende headed home a goal in the 82nd minute that appeared to be the game winner for the Bobcats. Mo Odolla threw the ball in from the sidelines that was flicked to Kapende by senior Brett Basham.

Kapende's goal came just moments after the Bobcats were awarded a red card and were forced to play the final nine minutes and overtime with just 10 players.

Three minutes after Kapende's tally, Westminster was awarded a penalty kick on a handball inside the 18 and Nick Iregui scored the attempt to even the game at 2-2 and send it into OT.

Westminster led in shots 19-9 and put 14 attempts on frame, forcing Assal to make a career-best 11 saves. Odolla led the charge upfront with three shots, while Putnam had two.

FSU returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Salisbury for its CAC opener at 1:00 pm.
