FERRUM, Va. – Senior Holly Van Wie and sophomore Sam Coffey each scored twice to power Frostburg to a dominating 8-0 shutout of Ferrum, Sunday afternoon.
The win is the first for the Bobcats this fall as they improve to 1-7, while the Panthers settle at 1-5. The victory is the largest for FSU since an 11-1 win over Notre Dame in 2016 and is the largest shutout win since an 11-0 blanking of Bethany in 2012.
Both of Van Wie's and Coffey's goals came in the first half as the Bobcats built their lead to 5-0 at intermission. Junior Logan Gladden also found the net in the first at 20:27.
Senior Molly Pickard handed out assists on Van Wie's first goal at 15:31 and Coffey's first tally at 16:39.
Gladden found the back of the cage nearly four minutes later for a 3-0 lead, while Van Wie (22:55) and Coffey (32:47) closed out the half.
Senior Ashleigh Myers opened the second half with a goal off an assist from classmate Cara Morrell, while Pickard scored the game's seventh goal in the 47
th minute.
First-year Rylee Johnson closed the afternoon with her first collegiate goal at 62:57 for the 8-0 win.
Frostburg outshot Ferrum 16-2 and the Bobcats scored eight goals on their 12 shots on net. FSU also held a 7-1 edge in penalty corners.
Junior Sierra Smizer and first-year Maggie Haupt each played 35 minutes in net, while Haupt made the only save for Frostburg.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Juniata at 7:00 pm.
