HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team was defeated by Juniata on the road by the final of 4-1 on Wednesday Night.
Frostburg goalie Sierra Smizer was challenged early on in the match, as she faced four shots, three on goal, in the game's first nine minutes, but she knocked each one away successfully. Juniata's fifth shot off the stick of senior Rebecca Waite was the one that opened the game's scoring. The goal that gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead was assisted by midfielder Meredith Shephard.
The Bobcats responded quickly, as senior forward Holly Van Wie rattled the cage off of a pass from sophomore Gabby Rachuba to tie the game, 1-1 in the 11
th minute. The goal was Van Wie's third of the season and her third in the last two games, as she scored two in the Bobcats' victory against Ferrum on Sunday. Rachuba earned her first assist for the campaign on the scoring play.
The match remained tied for just under five minutes until Juniata's Olivia Marker knocked a shot past Smizer to bring the Eagles back to a one-goal lead.
The first half ended with the score being 2-1 in favor of the Eagles. Juniata outshot FSU in the half, putting seven shots on goal to the Bobcats' two. The Eagles also played a disciplined first half, as they held a 10-0 penalty corner advantage in the first 35 minutes of action.
Juniata came out of the halftime locker room firing, as Marker scored her second goal of the match, this one assisted by senior forward Lindsay Scholten, in the 37
th minute to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles would go on to add another tally to their score as Marker beat the goalie for the third time to give Juniata a three-goal advantage in the 54
th minute. The hat trick was Marker's first of her collegiate career.
Juniata would hold the 4-1 lead to the end of the match. The Bobcats couldn't get anything going on offense in the second half, as they were shutout in the shots categories for the final 35 minutes. Overall, the Eagles outshot FSU, 18-2 and 12-2 on shots on goal.
The Bobcats didn't get the opportunity to create any offense with a penalty corner for the first time since their match on October 15, 2016 against Salisbury.
Frostburg's record drops to 1-8 on the year, while the Eagles jump to 4-3 on their campaign.
