FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Bobcats field hockey team was defeated by the Goucher Gophers by the score of 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Goucher scored the game's first goal, as senior forward Maya Belin delivered the successful shot 33 seconds into the game. Sophomore midfielder Caroline Doll added a goal of her own, assisted by junior Valerie Mendoza, to give the Gophers a 2-0 advantage over the Bobcats.
FSU's Gabby Rachuba scored the Bobcats' lone goal of the game with 15 minutes left in the first half. It was Rachuba's first goal of the season and the third of her career. Senior forward Holly Van Wie earned the assist on the play, her second in as many games.
With a 2-1 lead coming out of halftime, the Gophers added two more unassisted goals, both by Belin, to give her a hat trick on the game and four total goals on the year.
FSU junior goalie Sierra Smizer stopped eight shots, the second-most saves she has earned on the season (12 against Randolph-Macon). The Gophers outpaced the Bobcats in shots, 16-8.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 0-5 on the season while Goucher gets to .500 for the first time this season at 3-3.
Frostburg will be back on the field on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., as they host the Bridgewater Eagles in a makeup game from Sunday that was postponed due to inclement weather.
