FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer shook off a sluggish first half with three goals in the second for a dominating 3-0 shutout of Saint Vincent in the first game of the 2018 FSU Tournament at Bobcat Stadium, Saturday.
The Bobcats (1-0) attempted eight shots in the first half and couldn't find the net. However, the second half was a different story as the Bobcats attempted 12 shots and found the net three times. In fact, all three Bobcat goals came after Frostburg attempted five shots over the first 12 minutes of the second stanza.
Senior Haven Mackie scored the first two goals of the second half and senior Christian Deynes scored the third as FSU outshot the Bearcats 20-5. Frostburg also held a decisive 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Saturday afternoon's win marks the second time in the last three games dating back to last season that FSU has picked up a victory via a 3-0 shutout.
At 58:45, Frostburg broke onto the scoreboard when sophomore Randy Putnam crossed the ball across the 18 and Mackie left footed home the shot for a 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, Mackie connected on a free kick from just outside the 18 in front of Frostburg's bench.
The Bobcats put an exclamation point on the afternoon when Deynes scored off an assist from senior Willie Jefferson with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
Mackie and Putnam led the Bobcats with three shots each, while first year keeper Joel Assal notched two saves for his first collegiate win.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Randolph on the second day of the FSU Tournament at 3:30 pm.
