PURCELLVILLE, Va. - The 21st-ranked Frostburg State baseball team rallied for a 7-6 game one victory and mashed 17 hits in a 26-10 game two win over Wesley Friday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play at Fireman's Field.
Frostburg (15-6, 3-3 CAC) set a season-high in scoring with 26 runs in the nightcap while Wesley (7-14, 1-6 CAC) has lost eight of its last nine games.
Senior pitcher Dan Richardson notched his first win of the season in game one before senior Greg Schneider collected his team-leading fifth win of the season in the nightcap, a mark that ties for second in the league.
Senior Kyle Burger collected his second five-hit game of the year in game two, tying a single-game school record once again.
GAME ONE
The opening game of the day began with with two scoreless innings before Wesley jumped out to a 4-0 edge with a grand slam in the third. The Wolverines added one more run in the fourth and went up 5-0.
Frostburg did its damage offensively in the middle innings, scoring six of its seven runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Burger and senior infielder Mike Takovich notched a pair of hits each for the Bobcats, while first-year infielder Bret Fogle led the way offensively with three hits and three RBI.
The Bobcats climbed back into the game in the bottom of the fourth with a three-RBI double down the left field line to make the score 5-3. Frostburg cut the deficit to just one (5-4) in the fifth and took a 6-5 lead in the sixth.
Fogle put Frostburg in front with a two-RBI single and the Bobcats expanded their lead to 7-5 with a single from Fogle.
Junior Brady Adam made the start on the mound for Frostburg, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing seven hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts. Richardson was superb in relief with 3.1 innings of work.
Richardson allowed just one run and three hits without allowing a walk and striking out four. Sophomore pitcher Mike Livingston earned his fifth save of the year, concluding the game with a strikeout to seal the 7-6 final.
GAME TWO
Frostburg walked 21 times and the trio of Burger (five hits), senior Matt Bougourd (three hits) and senior Logan Corrigan (three hits) recorded 11 of the Frostburg's 17 hits.
The contest broke the NCAA DIII record for combined walks (32) in a single game which stood for nearly 20 years. The Bobcats walked seven times in the fourth inning and three individuals (senior Patrick Bosley, junior Nick Fuhrmann and senior Evan Colon) each walked four times in the game.
FSU led for all nine innings and opened up a commanding 14-0 cushion over the first four innings. It is the second time this year that Frostburg has scored 20+ runs in a single game after notching 23 against Penn State Abington on February 16.
Bosley added a pair of hits for Frostburg and was one of eight players with a hit in the nightcap. The Bobcats also smacked four triples in the contest after entering the day without one in 2018.
The Bobcats plated a pair of runs in the first and three in the second, chasing Wolverine starter Mike Sabino. Frostburg continued its unrelenting offensive onslaught with one run in the third and seven in the fourth inning. The Bobcats wrapped up the evening with six runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Schneider made the start on the mound for Frostburg and punched out eight batters in five innings.
