Frostburg Rallies Past York (Pa.) With Walkoff Single

FSU will collide with York (Pa.) on Friday morning in the CAC Tournament

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg senior Kyle Burger tied a school record with three home runs and senior Logan Corrigan smacked an opposite field single that plated the game-winning run with no outs as the Bobcats rallied for a 15-14 victory over York (Pa.), Monday afternoon.

The game served as the regular-season finale for Frostburg as it sits at 23-12 overall and 9-9 in the CAC. FSU has earned the fourth seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament, which gets underway on Friday at Salisbury University.

The CAC Tournament features a new pod system this season and top seed Salisbury will host both Frostburg and sixth-seed York (18-16-1, 9-9 CAC).

The Bobcats and Spartans will square off again on Friday morning in the pod's first contest at 9:00 am. A full preview will be available prior to the tournament.

Burger took full advantage of what could be his final home game as he finished 5-for-6 with three homers. His three bombs tied a school record for HRs in a single-game and he is just the fourth Bobcat played in program history to do so.

He smacked a two-run bomb in the first inning, roped a three-run shot over the right center fence in the sixth and led off the ninth inning with a solo homer that pulled Frostburg to within 14-13. He also added a double, scored four times and drove in five. Burger recorded his third five-hit game of the season, tying the single game school record once again.

In all, the contest featured a combined six homers by both clubs and York (Pa.) never trailed in the game until the final run handed the Bobcats the walkoff win.

The Spartans also held significant leads of 4-0, 12-4 and 14-7, but the Bobcats clawed their way back starting with five runs in the eighth followed by three runs with no outs in the ninth for the victory.

The hosts pulled to within two runs, 14-12, following the five-run eighth inning. Junior Brock Antognoni started the scoring when he crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

Senior Greg Schneider singled home Burger and Schneider was driven home when senior Mike Takovich singled through the left side.

First-year Josh Clegg capped the outburst when he singled home Takovich and senior Colton Sivic.

In the ninth, Burger led off with his third homer of the game, Schneider followed with his first homer of the season that tied things at 14 and Corrigan grabbed the win when he smacked an opposite field single up the left field line that scored junior Nick Fuhrmann for the win.

Frostburg used five different pitchers on the afternoon. Junior Daniel Ryzcek got the start and allowed five earned runs, while fanning three. First-year Nathan Engle and senior Trenton Eirich combined to pitch the final three innings without allowing an earned run.

Eirich was credited with his first win of the season after tossing the ninth and holding the Spartans hitless.

The Spartans grabbed a 4-0 cushion following the top of the first inning. The Bobcats tied things at 4-4 after scoring two in the first and two more in the fourth.

Burger's first homer of the ballgame plated the first two runs and senior Evan Colon singled home Clegg and sophomore Devin Griffith for the third and fourth runs.

York surged to a 12-4 advantage with five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Burger's three-run homer in the home half of the sixth narrowed the deficit to 12-7. York plated two more runs in the eighth for the 14-7 lead before Frostburg's five-run bottom half of the eighth.

Schneider finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Clegg was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Sivic was just 1-for-1 with a run scored, but was walked five times, while Antognoni scored three times.
