FROSTBURG, Md. – All 11 seniors saw the field in some capacity for Frostburg State in a 15-11 non-conference victory over Hampden-Sydney Sunday afternoon at a chilly Bob Wells Field.
Frostburg (22-12) recognized its 11 seniors prior to the beginning of the matchup and carried that momentum into the contest with 15 runs. Hampden-Sydney (17-19) cut the Bobcats lead to one in the eighth inning, but ultimately had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
Frostburg took advantage of some early HSC miscues to open up a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Frostburg added two more runs in the second courtesy of run-scoring doubles from seniors Mike Takovich and Evan Colon for a 4-1 edge.
The Tigers rallied to tie the game at four with a run in the third and two in the fourth, but Frostburg countered with a clutch five-run outburst in the fourth inning to forge ahead for good.
Colon, who led the way offensively with four hits, put Frostburg up 6-4 with a single up the middle that scored senior infielder Colton Sivic and junior catcher Jason Paredes. Bougourd plated two more Frostburg runs in the fourth after he cracked a double, scoring senior pinch runner Greg Schneider and Colon for an 8-4 edge.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the sixth inning and led 10-4 before the Tigers used back-to-back home runs in the seventh to cut the score to 10-7.
Junior infielder Brock Antognoni notched a run-scoring single in the eighth as FSU went up 11-7. The Tigers cut their deficit to one with three runs in the eighth to make the score 11-10 in favor of the Bobcats.
Junior infielder Nick Fuhrmann converted in a big way with his pinch hit at-bat in the eighth inning with a double to deep right center that scored sophomore infielder Devin Griffith and first-year outfielder Josh Clegg for a 13-10 lead.
Colon recorded his fourth and fifth RBI on the day with a single in the eighth inning that brought home Fuhrmann and Sivic for a 15-10 lead.
Sivic capped the day with three hits and three runs scored for Frostburg.
Senior pitcher Lane Ward started on the mound and picked up his first win of the season. He tossed six innings and allowed five runs with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Takovich, sophomore Mike Livingston and junior Chase Delost each threw one inning out of the Frostburg bullpen.
