NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team split with No. 8 Christopher Newport on day two of the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Softball Tournament, Saturday.
The Bobcats defeated the Captains 10-8 in the first game of the day forcing a second game. Frostburg dropped game two against Christopher Newport 6-0 and is now eliminated from the CAC Tournament.
Frostburg finishes the season with an overall record of 22-16 and a 7-7 record in the CAC.
Christopher Newport will advance to the CAC Tournament Championship next weekend for a matchup with Salisbury.
In the first game, senior Allison Short tossed her 13th complete game of the year and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. With the win, Short now holds Frostburg's record for the most wins by a pitcher at 51.
The Bobcats started the game hot scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Sam Gatton scored the game's first run as sophomore Katelyn Mehrling singled to left field scoring Gatton from third base. Facing two outs with the bases loaded, senior Brittney Platt launched her fifth home run of the year and cleared the bases to take a 5-0 lead over the Captains.
Christopher Newport answered in the bottom of the first as Patty Maye Ohanian homered to left center for cut Frostburg's lead to 5-1.
First-year Taylor McCarty notched her 17th RBI of the season in the top of the second inning as Gatton crossed the plate for the second time in the game to give the Bobcats a 6-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the second, CNU added four runs on four hits as Leah Andrews recorded a three-run home run to cut the Frostburg lead to 6-5.
The Captains added a two-run homer in the bottom of the second as Leah Andrews hit her second of the game to take the lead over the Bobcats 7-6.
First-year Ally Wieman singled to left field in the top of the sixth inning scoring classmate Sam Carver, while in the next at-bat Gatton recorded a two-RBI single to center field bringing Platt and junior Olivia Ford around the bases for a 9-7 Bobcat advantage.
CNU added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh Platt flew out to right field on a sacrifice fly, scoring first-year Aliyah Ramey for a 10-8 Bobcat advantage.
In game two, Frostburg notched two hits and left three runners on base, while Christopher Newport generated 14 hits, six RBI and left eight runners on base.
Gatton and first-year Shylo Arneson each recorded a hit for the Bobcats.
Short is credited with the loss as her record falls to 12-7. Short pitched her second complete game of the day and 14
th of the year allowing six earned runs on 14 hits with one strikeout.
Christopher Newport opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with two runs and four hits to take a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats.
CNU added one run in the third and sixth inning.
Arneson singled to left center in the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced to second as sophomore Claire Hanlon was walked, but the Bobcats were unable to capitalize with a runner in scoring position.
The Captains scored the final two runs of the afternoon in the top of the seventh on three hits to take a 6-0 lead and win over the Bobcats.
