Baseball Picks Up 11-7 Victory Over SVU Thursday Night

BEL AIR, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team clinched a season sweep of Southern Virginia with an 11-7 victory over the Knights in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action on Thursday night at Harford Varsity Baseball Field.
 
Frostburg (20-11, 7-8 CAC) plated at least run in all but one inning en route to its 10th-straight victory over the Knights (16-16, 7-9 CAC). The 11-run outburst was highlighted by a towering three-run homer from junior infielder Nick Fuhrmann in the fifth inning, which handed Frostburg a lead it would not relinquish.
 
Frostburg has continued to rack up the runs this season, scoring in double digits on eight separate occasions.
 
Five different Bobcats recorded multiple-hit bids at the plate on Thursday, with senior designated hitter Logan Corrigan pacing the attack with three. All of Corrigan's hits went for extra bases with a double in the second, a double in the fourth and a triple in the sixth. Corrigan was also hit by a pitch and scored a run.
 
Senior hurler Greg Schneider made the start on the mound for Frostburg and tossed six innings, He allowed five hits and five runs with six strikeouts and four walks. Schneider has thrown at least five frames seven times this season and boasts a 7-2 overall record in 2018.
 
SVU struck first with a home run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Frostburg tied the game up at one in the bottom of the frame with consecutive doubles coming with two outs. Corrigan doubled to center and was brought home on a double down the left field line by senior Matt Bougourd.
 
FSU expanded its edge to 3-1 in the second inning with two more doubles from senior infielder Mike Takovich and junior outfielder Brady Adam. The Bobcats smacked six doubles on the evening and added a pair of triples.
 
The Knights added two more runs in the top of the third to tie the game at three. Frostburg regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a single from junior Brock Antognoni that stayed just inside the third base line which allowed senior Patrick Bosley to score.
 
SVU regained the lead once again with two runs in the top of the fifth for a 5-4 advantage. Once again the lead for the visitors was short lived as Fuhrmann sent a pitch over the wall in right for a three-run home run and a 7-5 Frostburg edge. The home run was the fourth of the season for Fuhrmann, a mark that leads the team.
 
FSU added four more insurance runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for an 11-5 lead before the Knights plated two runs in the top of the ninth for the 11-7 final score.
 
Senior pitcher Dan Richardson was stellar out of the bullpen for Frostburg with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just one hit with three strikeouts and has not allowed an earned run in his past four appearances.
 
Adam, senior Kyle Burger, Fuhrmann and Takovich all had two hits each for Frostburg.
