FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team posted a split against Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent Mary Washington, highlighted by an 8-4 game two win, on Saturday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.
Frostburg (18-11, 6-8 CAC) continues to push for a spot in the upcoming conference tournament and stayed in the mix against a potent Mary Washington (18-16-1, 7-9 CAC) squad.
Frostburg rebounded from a 9-1 defeat in the first game with an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap. Overall, three different players posted multiple hit games between the two contests.
GAME ONE
The visitors opened up a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and kept the Bobcats off the board until the bottom of the ninth.
UMW hurler Joe Thompson (4-3) posted a complete game effort, allowing eight hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
Junior pitcher Brady Adam made the start on the mound for Frostburg. He allowed six runs in 6.0 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts and two walks. The 15 strikeouts match a career high for Adam dating back to his first start in a Frostburg uniform on February 23 against New Rochelle.
Junior catcher Jason Paredes and classmate Nick Fuhrmann led Frostburg with a pair of hits each. It is the third multi-hit game of the season for Paredes (and first since March 4) and the eight multi-hit effort of the season for Fuhrmann.
The Bobcats scored their lone run of the contest in the ninth inning off a sacrifice fly from first-year pinch hitter Bret Fogle. Fogle skied a fly ball to left field, scoring Fuhrmann for the 9-1 final.
Senior pitcher Trenton Eirich pitched 3.0 innings of relief for Frostburg.
GAME TWO
The Frostburg pitching staff put together a strong outing while the offense found its rhythm in the middle innings in an 8-4 victory.
Adam transitioned to the outfield in game two and led the way offensively for Frostburg with three hits, a career-high five RBI and two runs scored. Adam has begun to play a larger role as a position player as of late, and posted his second three-hit game of the spring campaign.
Six other players posted one hit each for Frostburg, which mashed a total of 17 hits between the two games.
Frostburg struck first following a scoreless first frame for a 1-0 lead in the second. Adam started his big day at the dish with an RBI single to left that scored senior Mike Takovich.
Former Bobcat Nick Bass tied the game for Mary Washington in the fourth with a double to right center. Bass, who was one of three UMW players to post multiple hits in game two, led the way for the Eagles at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Frostburg countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth for a 2-1 lead off a single from senior Kyle Burger that scored junior Brock Antognoni.
The Bobcats scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run from Adam that put the hosts ahead 4-1. It is the first home run for Adam in a Frostburg uniform and provided Frostburg with some breathing room in the later innings.
UMW would not go quietly, tying the game at four with a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.
The Bobcats racked up four runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the 8-4 final. Adam smacked a two-RBI single up the middle, plating Takovich and senior pinch runner Greg Schneider.
Adam would eventually score the final run of the afternoon from second base on a sacrifice fly from Corrigan. First-year outfielder Paul D'Amico III, who made his third start of the season, also scored from third on the sacrifice fly to center.
Corrigan also made the start on the mound for Frostburg and allowed just one run in 4.1 innings. Senior Dan Richardson allowed a pair of runs in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen and sophomore Mike Livingston earned the win after pitching the final two innings.
Livingston allowed just two hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. He has not allowed more than two hits in each of his last four relief appearances.
