Softball Endures Doubleheader Loss to CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team suffered a pair of losses in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) matchup to the 11th ranked Christopher Newport Captains, Saturday afternoon.
 
The Bobcats dropped game one to the Captains 11-3 in five innings and was outlasted 6-5 in nine innings for game two.
 
With a pair of losses today Frostburg falls to 18-14 overall and 5-7 in league action, while CNU jumps to 30-6 overall and 13-1 in the CAC.
 
In game one, senior Sam Gatton was 1-for-2 from the plate with one run scored and one walk, while first-year Taylor McCarty recorded one hit and one RBI.
 
Frostburg notched four hits and committed three errors, while Christopher Newport generated 14 hits and one error.
 
First-year Ally Wieman started the contest for the Bobcats in the circle, allowing six earned runs with six hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched. Wieman is credited with the loss, dropping her record to 5-5. Sophomore Katelyn Mehrling finished the game in the circle allowing eight hits and five earned runs with one strikeout in 3.2 innings.
 
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Sam Gatton scored the game's first run off a Christopher Newport error. During the next at-bat, sophomore Claire Hanlon crossed the plate on a wild pitch, while in the same at-bat McCarty hit an RBI single that scored first-year Kat Treff from second base.
 
In the bottom half of the first inning, the Captains answered with six runs on seven hits and the Bobcats committed two errors as CNU held a 6-3 advantage over Frostburg.
 
Christopher Newport added three runs in the fourth inning and two in the bottom of the fifth to take game one 11-3.
 
In game two, senior Allison Short logged her 10th complete game allowing 13 hits and six earned runs with five strikeouts. With the loss, Short's record falls to 9-6.
 
Mehrling led the Bobcats at the plate with three hits in five at-bats, while junior Olivia Ford notched two hits.
 
Christopher Newport scored the game's first four runs, scoring one in the first inning and three in the second inning for a 4-0 lead over Frostburg.
 
The Bobcats scored their first run in the top of the sixth inning as first-year Sam Carver hit an RBI single to center, scoring classmate Carly Wirth. In the next at-bat, first-year Aliyah Ramey entered the game as a pinch hitter and launched a grand slam to center field to take a 5-4 lead over CNU. The home run was Ramey's first of her career and Frostburg's first since the contest against Wesley on April, 13th.   
 
The Captains answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run to tie the game at 6-6.
 
In the bottom of the ninth inning, CNU's Liz Andrews hit a walk-off single to take the win 6-5.
 
The Bobcats are back in action Monday as they host Penn State-Harrisburg for their final home contest of the season with the first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
