VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team picked up a pair of wins as it downed New Paltz 14-5 in five innings and Keuka 8-3 at the Beach Blast Tournament, Friday afternoon.
With the two wins today, Frostburg improves its overall record to 4-4.
In game one, the Bobcats generated 17 hits with 13 runs batted in on 30 at-bats, while New Paltz only totaled six hits with five runs batted in on 22 at-bats.
New Platz only left four runners on base, whereas Frostburg left six.
Junior Oliva Ford recorded three hits, one run batted in and scored two runs, while first-year Aliyah Ramey had five runs batted in with two hits.
Senior pitcher Allison Short was credited with the win (2-2), allowing three hits and two earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched.
The Bobcats opened the game with an impressive first inning, as senior Sam Gatton scored the game's first run off a Ramey sacrifice hit. Frostburg added three more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning, Ramey singled and scored first-year Sam Caver to give the Bobcats a 10-0 advantage. Frostburg notched five runs on five hits and left three runners on base in the inning.
In game two, sophomore Katelyn Mehrling pitched a complete game allowing seven hits, one earned run and recorded three strikeouts for her first win of the season.
Mehrling also led the Bobcats at the plate, as she went 4-for-4 generating four hits along with three runs batted in.
Frostburg scored the game's first run as Caver reached first base on a fielder's choice scoring senior Brittney Platt giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead at the end of the second inning.
Keuka scored three runs in the top of the third inning, but the Bobcats answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Ramey scored from a fielding error by Keuka, knotting the game 3-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Frostburg scored five runs on a Mehrling double that cleared the bases giving the Bobcats an 8-3 lead and victory.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against Hunter followed by a contest with Roanoke at 2:00 p.m. on day two of the Beach Blast Tournament.
