OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior right-hander Greg Schneider lost a no-hit bid on a seeing-eye single up the middle late in the ninth inning as the Frostburg State baseball team rolled to a 5-0 road victory over the Stevenson Mustangs Monday afternoon at Sugar Field.
Schneider (3-0) tossed a complete game for the Bobcats and has been nearly unhittable in each of his three appearances this season.
Aside from walking the second batter of the game, Schneider retired 25-consecutive Stevenson batters before the Mustangs notched their first hit in the ninth inning. Schneider was vying for just the second no-hit bid in NCAA DIII baseball this season.
The Jefferson Hills, Pa. native fanned 15 batters for the third time this season and the complete game shutout lowers his ERA to a miniscule 0.41. Schneider has allowed just one run this season and has gone 21-consecutive innings without allowing a run.
Schneider has also received plenty of run support this season on the hill with Frostburg outscoring its opponents 24-1 when he is on the mound. The 15 strikeouts match a career high for Schneider, who has fanned 45 batters in 22.0 innings of work this season.
Offensively, Frostburg (7-1) did its damage in the second, third and fourth innings of the non-conference matchup. The Bobcats registered five runs on nine hits with no errors.
Senior infielder Mike Takovich registered the only multi-hit game of the day for either squad, while seven other Bobcats notched one hit at the plate.
Frostburg plated three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a double from senior Colton Sivic that scored Takovich for a 2-0 Frostburg lead. Sivic would later score on a wild pitch as Frostburg led 3-0.
The Bobcats added another run in the third on a run-scoring single from senior Logan Corrigan for a 4-0 lead and plated their final run in the fourth for a 5-0 advantage.
Sivic scored a game-high two runs for Frostburg and drove in a run with his double in the second.
Senior outfielder Evan Colon continued his hot start to the season with another hit. He has recorded a hit in seven of nine games this season and boasts a .406 batting average.
The Bobcats return to the diamond on Saturday, March 10 for a neutral site contest with Eastern slated for 3:00 p.m. The matchup will take place at Sugar Field on the campus of Stevenson University.
