Baseball Upends No. 1 SUNY Cortland for Fifth Straight Win

A six-run sixth inning highlighted by three home runs propelled the Bobcats to victory over #1 SUNY Cortland

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team hit three home runs and pushed six runs home in the sixth inning while holding top-ranked SUNY Cortland scoreless in seven of nine innings to earn an 8-5 victory over the Red Dragons at Babb Field in the Baltimore Invitational.

It was the first game of the weekend for Frostburg (7-1), which dealt with a number of schedule changes leading up to the highly anticipated matchup. The victory for Frostburg was the first over a ranked opponent since the 2016 CAC Tournament.

The Bobcats racked up eight runs on 10 hits, with two multi-hit efforts at the plate on a breezy day from juniors Jason Paredes and Nick Fuhrmann while senior Logan Corrigan led the way with three RBI.

FSU hit three home runs on the afternoon and are averaging 11.25 runs/game this season. Paredes, senior Patrick Bosley and Corrigan all homered for Frostburg in the sixth.

Junior hurler Brady Adam tossed another gem as the Olney, Md. native went seven innings while only allowing two hits and two runs (one earned). Adam, now 3-0 on the season, fanned eight Cortland batters and kept the Red Dragons off the scoresheet in all but one inning.

Adam has had a tremendous start to the young season, only surrendering four runs in 16.2 innings pitched. He has notched 30 strikeouts and boasts a 1.08 earned run average. Adam, who leads the CAC with three wins, is tied with senior pitcher Greg Schneider for the conference lead with 30 strikeouts.

Cortland opened up the matchup with a quick 2-0 advantage in the second inning and limited Frostburg to just one hit through four innings. Cortland starter Isiah Hudson was rolling until the fifth inning where Frostburg got on the scoreboard.

Senior Mike Takovich led off the inning with a single and advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt from first-year Paul D'Amico. Senior Evan Colon brought home the first run of the day for the Bobcats with a single to left that cut the Cortland lead to just one.

Fuhrmann tied the game at two with a single to right that scored Colon.

Frostburg began the top of the sixth with back-to-back solo homers from Paredes and Bosley that chased Red Dragons pitcher Noah Ernst. Takovich and D'Amico drew walks in the ensuing at-bats before senior Kyle Burger reached on an error to load the bases.

Colon delivered again with a sacrifice fly that scored Takovich for a 5-2 edge. It was Colon's 15th RBI of the season, a mark that ties for second in the CAC.

Corrigan capped the inning in a big way with a three-run blast to right, which handed Frostburg a commanding 8-2 edge. It was Corrigan's second homer of the season.

Adam gave way to senior Trenton Eirich who was chased after allowing three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Mike Livingston entered in relief and earned the save with 1.2 innings of scoreless work with two strikeouts.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow against Stevenson at 2:30 p.m.
