SALISBURY, Md. - The 11th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team fell in both ends of a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader, 14-4 and 12-5, Saturday afternoon at Salisbury.
Frostburg (13-6, 1-3 CAC) entered the matchup following a dramatic win over Southern Virginia last Thursday, while Salisbury (14-7, 4-2 CAC) pushed its winning streak to four games with the doubleheader sweep.
GAME ONE
In game one, the Bobcats registered four runs on eight hits, while Salisbury tallied 14 runs on nine hits and took advantage of four Bobcat errors.
Despite getting at least one baserunner on in each of the first four innings, the Bobcats were unable to plate any runners, and the game was scoreless through the fourth.
Senior starting pitcher Logan Corrigan surrendered three unearned runs in the fifth inning due to a pair of Frostburg errors and a passed ball. He helped his own cause in the sixth inning with an RBI single, plating junior Nick Fuhrmann.
Salisbury used a run-scoring triple and sacrifice fly to grow its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Corrigan was tagged with the loss with 5.1 innings, five runs (two earned), five hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Salisbury pushed across nine combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings against the Bobcat bullpen. Junior Travis Brashear tossed one inning, allowing one earned run with a walk. Brashear, junior Daniel Ryczek, junior Michael Brunvoll and senior Lane Ward all faced batters in the seventh, with Ward working out of the inning and finishing the game.
First-year outfielder Josh Clegg doubled in the top of the eighth, and came around to score on junior infielder Brock Antognoni's double two batters later.
In the ninth, senior outfielder Matt Bougourd belted his second home run of the season, with a two-run shot driving in sophomore infielder Devin Griffith.
Of the 14 runs surrendered by Bobcat pitchers, eight were unearned, and the Bobcats notched a season-low four strikeouts while surrendering seven walks and three hit batsmen.
Bougourd and Corrigan both registered a pair of hits in game one, and the Bobcats drew six walks on the day.
GAME TWO
Salisbury opened up a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and the Bobcats were unable to overcome the fast start by the hosts.
Corrigan was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a walk while Bougourd and senior infielder Patrick Bosley had two hits each.
Junior hurler Brady Adam went 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs (five earned) with six walks and four strikeouts. Senior pitcher Trenton Eirich came on in relief, allowing four runs (three earned) with one walk and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Junior pitcher Christian Rivera and junior Chase Delost combined to close out the final three innings of the conference matchup. The duo did not allow a run and tossed a combined two strikeouts.
Senior Greg Schneider got Frostburg on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third as Frostburg trailed 4-1. Salisbury tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 6-1.
Bosley cracked a single through the right side, scoring Bougourd to bring the deficit to 6-2.
